Picking up from where that Character Page History leaves off because I'll take Wiki Pages that Aren't Updated for $500, Alex
So after that incident regarding Kazuma's exile, we find that Bishamon is actually pretty broken up about this and why wouldn't she be? Kazuma's been her number two since the feudal Japan era and to find out that he's been helping out their enemy like that? Y u gotta be like that man? Kugaha on the other hand is delighted by this turn of events. With Kazuma out of the way, his master plan of killing Bishamon and raising the new Bishamon to follow his orders can finally come to fruition. To kill Bishamon though, he needs the power of a god… and what better god than one who already has beef with them to begin with? In order to intice Yato's anger, Kugaha kidnaps Iki Hiyori along with Kazuma and locks them up somewhere in Takamagahara. When Yato hears about this, naturally, he thinks Bishamon's behind all this and goes to confront her. A fight ensues, Yukine levels up and Bishamon practically goes mad with anger. Meanwhile, Kugaha's released demons who specifically target the rest of Bishamon's shinki. With her shinki dying left and right, Bishamon grows weaker and weaker yet refuses to step down from her fight with Yato. What finally does stop the fight is when the medicine Kugaha had given Bishamon to dull the pain of carrying so many shinki finally wears off. Without the medicine, she and her team are finally opened to the full effects of the blight that had been going around. (Blight: what happens when a shinki stings its master. These stings occur when a shinki does something it believes is wrong. Said blight in question had come from one of Bishamon's shinki, Aiha and was part of Kugaha's plot)
Aiha though finally manages to find Hiyori and Kazuma and busts them out, begging for him to stop Kugaha and save everyone. Naturally, when Kazuma and Hiyori finally show up, Yato realizes what a huge misunderstanding this all is and that Bishamon wasn't behind Hiyori's kidnapping. Unfortunately, Bishamon's still mad with anger and continues to fight. It's only when Kazuma stands in the way that she finally comes to her senses, breaking down and sobbing into her Hafuri's arms. "She's crying her eyes out," as Hiyori says. "Like a lost child." Eventually, Kugaha comes to taunt them about everything, insinuating that Bishamon was no longer worthy of her position but instead of punishing him, she releases him of his name and tells Yato he's free to pursue Kuguha as he's no longer her business to deal with. As Bishamon turns to deal with the ayakashi that were unleashed on the rest of her shinki, Yato leaves her with a bit of advice:
"Everything a god does is righteous."
And with that, he leaves Takamagahara with Yukine and Hiyori.
Bishamon on the other hand repeats what Yato had done centuries ago: cutting down shinki that had been consumed by the ayakashi as a form of mercy killing. When all of it was over though, Bishamon and what remained of her shinki decide a fresh start is best. They would start being more open with each other instead of just hiding their concerns away. Kazuma is reinstated as Bishamon's number two and we find that a certain war god is apparently fond of cheap puns like "Bananagging".
This matter with Kugaha was just a small detail in the bigger picture though as it turned out he had another master: someone called The Sorcerer, or at least that was what the other gods had started calling him. What concerned them about said sorcerer the most was the fact that he tried to control ayakashi the way gods control spirits to make shinki. Unfortunately, due to a number of incriminating clues, the identity of The Sorcerer is suspected to be another member of the Big Six: the god of business and fishing, Ebisu.
It's only when the gods find out that Ebisu had headed into Yomi when Bishamon and Kazuma meet with everyone else. Apparently, Yato's gone missing and has headed down there too. Bishamon descends into Yomi after Yato and Ebisu. She ends up rescuing them from Izanami who's apparently so lonely, she's kept them tied up in the meanwhile. Despite the fact she's managed to rescue them, coming out of Yomi is another matter entirely. It's only when Hiyori calls for Bishamon that she's managed to get out and it's when Hiyori realizes that we've been reading Yato's name wrong this whole time when he finally comes out after them.
Apparently, this Sorcerer turns out to be Yato's father and has it out for him pretty badly. Daddy decides that the best way to get to his son is to target everyone around him. Unfortunately this means Bishamon's as good a target as anyone. Following an incident at a hospital owned by Hiyori's parents, one of Bishamon's shinki, Tsuguha, is tapped by daddy's staff. Unfortunately, this tap was enough to cause a crack in Tsuguha's name. That crack gets Bishamon stung and is enough to get Tsuguha bedridden. Because of this, Bishamon holes herself up in her room with Tsuguha, not talking to anyone until she sends for Yato to get some answers. That simple tap turned out to be more brutal than it seemed. It was enough for Tsuguha to remember how she died. This information is taken from the soul when they're turned into a shinki for one simple reason: the chance that said spirit might be overcome with anger by how they died and turn into an ayakashi. According to Yato, his father called this liberation.
Guess what happened to Tsuguha.
Maddened by the realization of her own death, she turns on Bishamon and nearly kills her. Fortunately, Kazuma manages to step in and singlehandedly executes Tsuguha before any further damage can be done. Naturally, word gets around and this does nothing for Bishamon and Kazuma's reputation with the rest of the gods.
Personality:
She really does live up to her title as "Strongest God of Combat"
What a waste, because she's also an incredible idiot
Only an idiot would waltz wilingly into the world of the dead."
Check any google search and you'll find that Bishamonten is usually a name given to a war god in Japanese Shinto belief. For some reason, Adachitoka has chosen to represent this particular war god as a war goddess. But it's fitting in a way. After all, hell hath no fury as a woman scorned and you can practically smell the scorn coming off this one when the mood strikes her. Bishamon is one of the major gods of Shinto; one of the Seven Lucky Gods which gives her quite a position as well as a fair amount of affluence. This ensures her and her shinki (spirits of deceased humans who were selected by a god to become their familiars of sorts) a comfortable life and a decently sized piece of estate in Takamagahara where most gods reside. She does shoulder the responsibilities placed upon her by said position with a certain measure of dedication but she does so with the same manner of one delegated to the front lines. She's tasked to cut down evil and she does so mercilessly and without hesitation. When called upon by the other gods, she tends to their summons without hesitation. Though gods aren't said to have any actual morals, Bishamon has an inherent sense of justice, an urge to protect those unable to protect themselves and perhaps a stronger than usual sense of what is evil in the world.
Straight off the bat, we're shown the side of Bishamon that can be attributed to her being a war god: her warlike nature and her explosive temper. At first, she's seen on the hunt for demons but it's only when she meets up with Yato and his party that the sparks really fly. Ever since the massacre of the -Ma clan, (Bishamon's first clan of Shinki of which Kazuma is the only survivor) Bishamon has harbored nothing but sheer hatred and a thirst for revenge toward Yato who was the sole perpetrator. The minute they make eye contact, she initiates the first blow and doesn't even wait until Yato is properly armed. She pulls no punches and strikes mercilessly, chasing him halfway through town and only letting up when she finally looses track of him. The only time she relinquishes is when Kazuma finally pulls her back and even then, she was willing to throw herself into the path of a vent of malicious energy which may have outright killed her. Even at the risk of death, her need for revenge is that great.
To those who haven't earned her ire, Bishamon shows herself as a more benevolent, merciful, almost motherly god(dess). Her shinki from both the -Ma and -Ha clans hold much respect for her and in turn, she does care about what they think about her. Despite this mutual affinity for each other, Bishamon and her shinki have a strange, strained relationship in which both she and her shinki have gotten used to smiling in each other's presences and hiding any ill feelings they may have. After all, no matter how benevolent a god you may be, benevolence alone isn't going to make sure every single spirit in your care is going to be the given the attention they want or need. Bishamon usually sticks to small team of shinki and everyone is usually left behind in Takamagahara when she goes off to battle. This, unfortunately, leads to most of them feeling neglected and unwanted. It isn't that Bishamon intentionally neglects them. Far from it. Her shinki are her family. She sees them as her children, after all. They mean so much to her that even when she's been betrayed by one, she can't take it upon herself to kill him. Sadly though, she remained unaware of how they feel for quite some time. Her shinki are initially reluctant to voice out their concerns for fear of being seen as ungrateful. In turn, Bishamon refuses to show how much of a toll having all these shinki are having on her physical body. No parent wants to show their child how they're suffering after all. It's gotten so bad that she requires medicines of various quantities in order to dull the pain. Most gods manage with a handful of shinki but Bishamon has enough to populate a small town and this is simply because she can't stop making them. On the way from a hunt, she chances upon a soul being attacked by demons and instead of ignoring it or defeating said demons and being on their way, she defeats the demons and gives the soul they rescued a name, thus adding yet another shinki to their number despite her team protesting. It's clear this isn't the first time she's done this. Given how many shinki she has, it's possible that many of them were also rescued in some way. Even Kazuma recalls how Bishamon had taken him in even if he seemed to be a useless shinki to start. Clearly, despite being a war god, Bishamon is also seen as a god capable of bestowing infinite mercy to the innocent.
However, her thirst for revenge does blind her at times as seen with the grudge she held towards Yato. Though the brunt of her anger is focused on him everyone connected to him will definitely feel the sting though with varying degrees. Take Kofuku for instance. Bishamon still treats her with the same respect due to a fellow diety and even conducts business with her regarding the vent of malevolent energy that was opened during the fight. But despite that, she isn't afraid to accuse Kofuku of opening those vents in order to keep her away from Yato. Then there's Hiyori Iki, the human usually seen by Yato's side. She's never been once used as a bargaining chip or a hostage by Bishamon's own hand. In fact, she seems almost cordial with the girl; accepting an invitation to a cherry blossom viewing party from her and even managing to have a casual conversation with her. This familiarity seems to have stemmed from her being involved in the kerfluffle caused by her former shinki which she wouldn't have been thrown into under normal circumstances. Yukine though seems to have shared the same treatment his master gets, though it's safe to say that Bishamon treats him far better than she ever would Yato. He's never been targetted on his own though he has been threatened. While she does seem visibly irritated at Yato, she does allow Yukine to train under Kazuma albeit with a more 'do whatever you want' attitude toward it. In my opinion, this shows a sense of fair play with Bishamon's wrath. Her anger is directed where it should be and she isn't one to tip the scales over to her favor on purpose.
The massacre of the -Ha clan was an eyeopener, both for Bishamon and what remained of her shinki. You can say it repaired relations all around. From Bishamon and her shinki and even between Bishamon and Yato... to an extent. Instead intensifying Bishamon's anger against him, she recognizes it for what it is: salvation. They had to die for their suffering to end. They had to die so she could live. They had to die for the greater good of humanity. It's because of this that she's willing to quell her anger, if only slightly. Their relationship leveled up, so to speak... from rage and bloodthirst to irritation. At least they can stand to stay in the same room with each other. It's only when Bishamon and Yato get absolutely hammered during the cherry blossom viewing part that she finally lets down her guard. In front of Yato and her Shinki, she breaks down in tears, sobbing about how she was aware that Yato had saved her and how she felt guilt about being unable to save them herself. It was this guilt that she hid away from all of her shinki, even Kazuma. Kazuma, who she trusts among everyone else be they god or Shinki.
There's a certain humility that can be seen from her because of this. She's never thrown her weight around, never muscled her way to getting what she wants just because she's the strongest war god in Takamagahara. She listens to her shinki and is willing to put aside that burning rage because of that rescue. She's even willing to take responsibility for what happened to the -Ha clan which is probably more than what some other gods would do for their spirits. Even when the -Ma clan had turned into an enraged spirit and were about to consume her, she begged Yato not to kill them and called them her children. Suffice to say Bishamon is rather like a mama bear in that respect: her spirits are like her children and if they get hurt, she will make them pay and they will be mauled.
Abilities:
Most of Bishamon's natural abilities and her weapons are tied to her shinki. To be honest, from her main arsenal to her battle gear to her mount. They're all shinki.
As a god of combat, Bishamon is seen to have exceptional fighting ability. This would of course include enhanced speed and strength as well as the ability to use any weapon. A whip, a sword, a pair of guns... if it's a weapon, she can wield it with impeccable ability.
All gods in the Noragami-verse have been shown to have these standard abilities:
Making shinki:
-Shinki are created from deceased human souls. When a god has selected a soul to become a shinki, they bestow a two names to said soul and this soul becomes sort of like a familiar to the god. To some, being a shinki is a profession and they do have unions and things.
Summoning shinki by their name and changing their form
-The first name a shinki is given for every day use. The second name however can be invoked by their master. When this name is called, the shinki changes form. These forms seem to range from those useful in combat (a suit of armor, a sword, a whip), an animal (a tiger, an eagle, a lion) to the seemingly useless (a pot lid, a broken handglass).
Teleporting to Takamagahara
-Takamagahara is where the gods are shown to reside along with their shinki. The gods use their shrines to teleport between there and the human world.
Immortality
-Gods can be killed. However, when they are, they are reborn in the body of a child without memories of their previous existence… if they have enough believers. Bishamon, being a rather popular god, is almost assured of this reincarnation.
Strengths: Physically capable, diplomatic, leader, maternal, protective
Weaknesses: Proud, stubborn, impulsive, alcoholic, anger management issues personified (not a word but you get my drift)
God/Shinki: God
Why?: Because canon has spoken.
Top 3 Choices: She'd better still be able to stay Bishamon or Kazuma's gonna freak.
God Type: Back in the feudal era, there was need for war gods. Temples to Bishamon were built on conquered territory to guard against future assaults. Before they rode to battle, shogun would send prayers to Bishamon for victory. But who wages war in this day and age with the same frequency? Prayers to Bishamon are no longer for victory but for protection, usually against misfortune and evil spirits. Since most illnesses are considered caused by evil spirits, she's also prayed to for those reasons. Aside from being a war god, Bishamon is also considered a god of wealth which is fitting being one of the Seven Lucky Gods. I can imagine she also gets some requests for lotto tickets from time to time. Let's not talk about naked jostling festivals though. That's just embarrassing.
